Comacchio Museum Pass

The Museum is hosted in the imposing neoclassical architecture of the XVIII century Hospital of the Infirm (1771/1784), realized by Antonio Foschini and Gaetano Genta. It is one of the most important and monumental buildings of the historical city center of Comacchio. Archaeological finds coming from the territory, ranging from the proto-history period to the Middle Ages, are exhibited. Through the exhibition of almost two-thousand finds, and thanks to reconstructions and guide apparatuses, the museum narrates the history of the ancient Po delta that, with its numerous navigable canals and land ways, over the centuries was an important trade junction that connected the civilizations of the Mediterranean world with continental Europe.

The museum is divided into themed and chronological sections.

The section dedicated to the Ancient Delta – Environment and Territory - covers the environment changes of the delta over the millennia, from the formation of the Po plain up to today, through alternating cycles of glaciation and rising sea level,   which created different environments such as tundras, forests, lagoons, up to human settlements.

The section of the final years of the Bronze Age and early Iron Age (Before Spina) exhibits the most ancient archaeological finds of the area that evidence contemporary human settlements in Frattesina of Fratta Polesine (Rovigo), well-known trade center between the Mediterranean and continental Europe in that period, which covered that role before Adria and Spina on the Adriatic Sea.

The section dedicated to Spina crossroads of the ancient world is focused on the story of the Etruscan city of Spina, Etruscan port and outpost for trade towards the Eastern Mediterranean. Spina’s relations with Athens and the Greek civilization, with Etruscan, Veneto, and Celtic people, and its “light” lagoon city structure on the river are illustrated in it.

The section called Territory without a City presents a delta area included in the orbit of Ravenna, seat of the imperial Adriatic fleet. A land of extensive agriculture and industrial productions of brick and salt, fish farming and fundamental connection center, by water and land ways, between Rome and northern Italy, the Adriatic, and Balkan regions. The delta evidences its trade vocation through the exceptional finding, in 1981 in Comacchio (Valle Ponti), of a Roman ship with its entire cargo, dating back to the period of Augustus and the globalized world of Rome.

The section dedicated to Comacchio, emporium on the sand narrates how, in a period in which the Roman cities declined and in some cases disappeared, a series of settlements along the northern Adriatic coast emerged, almost out of nowhere, in areas protected by rivers and lagoons (such as Comacchio and Venice), in a land contended by Goths, Byzantines, and Longobards. Therefore, Comacchio emerged in times in which the Mediterranean trade ways, those along the Po River, were still active and efficient.

To mark the summer solstice, the open-air section of the Museo Delta Antico comes alive for a special evening celebrating history, nature and music.

From 7:00 PM, a guided tour will lead visitors through the evocative reconstructions of the Etruscan city of Spina, bringing this ancient settlement back to life under the evening sky.

From 9:30 PM, the stage is set for the Festa della Musica, the internationally celebrated music event held every 21 June in more than 120 countries around the world to mark the summer solstice. The event is promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture, SIAE, AIPFM and the European Commission.

Modern architecture surrounded by greenery in Lido di Spina between the coastal pinewood and the beach. It was built in the early seventies by architect and designer Nanda Vigo by the will of master Remo Brindisi (1918 – 1996).

When the building was inaugurated and opened to the public in 1973 under the name of Alternative Museum Remo Brindisi, it was divided into two distinct functions: a summer residence and a museum to house Remo Brindisi’s precious collection.

A very peculiar construction characterized by a big central cylinder that connects the different floors where the living as well as the study and exhibition areas are placed.

The house is adorned with a beautiful spiral stair with wide treads and a steel handrail and the museum was founded to give full visibility to the interdisciplinary relationships that link the visual arts, from architecture to design, from painting to sculpture.

The collection, in which works made by Brindisi himself are on display, includes about two thousand works and is representative of the major national and international art forms of the 20^th century: Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Mimmo Rotella, Lucio Fontana, Mario Schifano, Francis Bacon, Medardo Rosso, Emilio Vedova, Giorgio De Chirico, Giò Pomodoro, Henry Moore, Arturo Martini, Emilio Greco, Virgilio Guidi, Mario Sironi, Hans Arp, Ladislas Kijno, Mario Tozzi, Gino Severini, Pippo Oriani, Gianni Dova, Roberto Crippa, Antonio Corpora, Bruno Munari, Agostino Bonalumi…

It is an active factory for a few months throughout the year.

It is a museum because it proposes a historical tour.

The Pickling Factory collects the traditions and culture of Comacchio, a town which has always shared a special bond with the surrounding lagoons. In autumn you can visit the production cycle of anchovies, sandsmelts and especially eels, which are prepared in the Fire Room in four main steps: cutting, spitting, cooking and packaging.

The Fire Room – the building dates back to the beginning of the 20^th century. The great pavilion is characterized by twelve big fireplaces on the eastern side of the Room, built in five couples on a straight line, while the first and last chimney are added to the first and last couple. Between every couple there is a niche.

Calata – it was a landing stage where the raw materials that had to be processed were delivered. The fish caught in the Comacchio lagoons arrived here to be marinated: in the so-called “Calata” the fish was first selected according to its size.

Vinegar Room – during the 19^th century, the pickling used to preserve fish was prepared in a tun with a tap, used for broaching. The mixture of vinegar, salt and water was emulsified with a small shovel and, when ready, used for marinating eels and small sandsmelts.

In the following century, the pickling was prepared in tuns and barrels with different shapes and capacity.

The Food Lab of the Pickling Factory is a Slow Food Presidia: you can purchase the traditional marinated eel of Comacchio lagoons, marinated sandsmelts and marinated anchovies.
